The spongy mesophyll contains large air spaces these internal exposed cell surfaces facilitates gaseous and also the exchange of water vapour between the cells and inter cellular air spaces. These intercellular gaseous exchange systems open out through the stomata. There is a respiratory chamber present below the lower epidermis which is meant for collecting gas and the vapour and then escapes out.
