The ground tissue system of leaves is also known as mesophyll tissue. The mesophyll tissue is differentiated into two. They are the palisade tissue and the spongy cells. The mesophyll spongy cells occur towards the lower epidermis. The cells of these layer is characterized by the irregular or isodiametric cells with large inter cellular space.
