How can lichens be used to indicate pollution?
Lichens like Parmelia, Usnea, Cladonia, etc. and few mosses are sensitive to air pollution, especially SO2.
Hence, when air is polluted, they fail to grow.
Absence of these species in a locality is an indication of pollution.
