Rhizobium infects the roots of certain leguminous plants belonging to Family Leguminosae (pea, groundnut, bean, pulses). They infect the cortex of roots, multiply and form root nodules. They are capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen in the form of nitrates and make it available to the host plant. In return, they take food and shelter from the host plant, thus forming a symbiotic association.
